Can Men Get Cancer from Using Talcum Powder?
Talc seems harmless. It absorbs excess sweat and usually smells pleasant. But talc can be contaminated with asbestos when mined from the earth. Asbestos is a known carcinogen that can cause many types of cancer, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. Many men don’t think about the dangers of talc and believe it can’t harm them. Unfortunately, this isn’t true.
Exposure to Talc: Men at Risk?
While body powder can be one of the primary sources of exposure to asbestos-contaminated talc, talc is also encountered in many unexpected products by men at home and work every day.
- Talc Products
In addition to body powder used by men in sports and personal hygiene products, talc is also found in many products men encounter at work and home, including:
- Gloves
- Paint
- Ceramic tiles
- Rubber
- Insecticides
- Paper
- Soaps
- Condoms
- Talc Exposure
Men participating in sports or workouts often use asbestos-contaminated talc body powder for athletes. You can inhale or ingest talc as the asbestos-contaminated mineral enters the air, but it can also enter your body through any other orifice. Asbestos-contaminated talc products can also enter men’s bodies through the urethra, lodging in the testes or nearby.
