Gen-1 Gene Therapy Shows Promise for Ovarian Cancer Patients:
It can be a frightening time if you or a loved one are facing an ovarian cancer diagnosis. Figuring out your treatment options, community and family support, and future prognosis can be overwhelming, even under the best circumstances. Fortunately, treatments for ovarian cancer are advancing every day. In fact, a new gene therapy called Gen-1 offers promise for the future.
Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer is the fifth deadliest disease faced by women in the U.S. More than 22,000 new cases of the disease each year are considered advanced in stages three or four because ovarian cancer often doesn’t present many symptoms until the advanced stages. Stages three and four of ovarian cancer have an average five-year survival rate of 41% and 20%, respectively. Meaning we need more effective treatment options for advanced-stage ovarian cancer.
Gen-1 Gene Therapy Study
According to the phase 1/2 OVATION 2 study findings, Gen-1 may improve the prognosis for advanced-stage ovarian cancer patients. The new study involved 87 patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Forty-six patients received Gen-1 and neoadjuvant chemotherapy, while 41 patients in the control group received only neoadjuvant chemo. In typical treatment plans, patients receive neoadjuvant chemotherapy as a tumor shrinker before the primary treatment method, usually surgery. When patients are injected with Gen-1, they secrete the IL-12 protein, which induces T-lymphocyte and natural killer cells to attack the cancer. Phase 2 of the study revealed that in the experimental group receiving Gen-1 injections, patients had a 33% improvement in “progression-free” survival, meaning the time from treatment until the ovarian cancer worsened increased by 33%. Based on the promising results of phases one and two, the study will continue treating patients with Gen-1.
