Encouraging Data for Mesothelioma Patients with Experimental Treatment:
Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. One of the most common forms of mesothelioma, malignant pleural mesothelioma, forms in the thin tissue surrounding the lungs and other internal organs. Unfortunately, it can take decades for serious symptoms to appear, meaning many sufferers won’t receive a diagnosis for twenty or more years. While malignant pleural mesothelioma is rare, it is notoriously difficult to treat and can lead to poor clinical outcomes. While treatment can be challenging, updated data from a phase one clinical trial offers some promising results.
Treating Pleural Mesothelioma
Unfortunately, there aren’t many long-term effective treatments for pleural mesothelioma. The main treatment options involve surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy clinical trials, or targeted therapy. But new research data offers promising results from using Galinpepimut-S (GPS), a “peptide cancer vaccine.”The research, performed by SELLAS Life Sciences Group, Inc., a late-stage clinical biopharmaceutical company, examined eight patients who either didn’t respond to treatment or relapsed after one round of treatment using one line of the standard of care therapy. The patients received three doses of GPS, the last in combination with nivolumab, a checkpoint inhibitor. Researchers found that the drug combination extended the life of the patients, with an average survival rate of 40.9 weeks for the patients still living.Angelos Stergiou, M.D., Sc.D. h.c., President and CEO, SELLAS, stated in a company release, “This updated data is very encouraging, as it not only confirms our data reported in June 2021, but now reflects an increased survival benefit even though almost all additionally enrolled patients had Grade III and IV malignant mesothelioma.” Hopefully, we’ll continue to see promising data from GPS in the future.
