Free Asbestos Screenings April 25-27, 2019:
Asbestos seems to be in the news constantly and we all know that exposure is bad. But why is it dangerous and who should worry about it?Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral found in rocks and soil. The mineral is resistant to heat and electricity and it’s flexible, meaning asbestos can easily be worked into fibers and incorporated into a wide range of fibers and building materials. As a result, asbestos was once widely used as a fire retardant in clothing and construction materials. Unfortunately, when asbestos fibers are dislodged through construction, demolition, or fire, they can be released into the air or water and ingested or inhaled by people.Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma, a cancer of the pleural lining of the lungs and abdomen. It can also cause lung cancer or asbestosis, a condition where scar tissue in the lungs can make it difficult to breathe. Many professions may be at risk for asbestos exposure, such as construction workers, longshoreman, electricians, insulators, Navy ship occupants and workers, mill workers, steel workers, welders, painters, pipefitters, and power plant workers.
Be sure to see the attached flyer for a full list of workers and Texas job sites that may be at risk. Free Asbestos Screening Information
