Global Asbestos Awareness Week
Each year, from April 1–7, the world pauses to recognize Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW)—a powerful global movement to prevent asbestos exposure, honor victims, and advocate for a future free from asbestos-related diseases. At Madeksho Law, we proudly support this international campaign and stand with families, survivors, and advocates who are fighting for awareness, accountability, and change.
Despite what many people believe, asbestos is not a problem of the past. Its use is banned in over 70 countries worldwide, but It remains legal in the United States, continues to be imported and used, and can still be found in homes, schools, workplaces, and consumer products. Its presence is often hidden—but its consequences are all too real.
Why Global Asbestos Awareness Week Matters
Asbestos is a known carcinogen, linked to devastating and often fatal illnesses such as mesothelioma, asbestosis, and lung, laryngeal, and ovarian cancers. The effects of exposure can take decades to surface, making it even more dangerous and difficult to detect early.
Here’s why GAAW remains critically important:
- Asbestos causes over 40,000 deaths annually in the U.S., and more than 200,000 worldwide.
- There is no safe level of asbestos exposure.
- Asbestos is still found in everyday materials—from insulation and tiles to automotive parts and household products.
- Prevention is the only cure.
We can’t undo the past, but we can prevent future suffering by raising awareness and advocating for strong protections and policies.
This Year’s Focus: Turning Awareness Into Action
In its 21st year, GAAW 2025 calls for bold action and unified global advocacy. This year’s campaign focuses on:
✔️ Banning the mining, manufacturing, and use of all six asbestos fibers globally
✔️ Preventing asbestos exposure through public education and regulation
✔️ Increasing enforcement of existing laws to protect workers and communities
✔️ Strengthening international partnerships to advance public health initiatives
The campaign theme, "One Word. One Week. One World.", underscores the urgent need for a united global response.
