Noted Black Women’s Advocacy Group Sues Johnson & Johnson over Talc in Baby Powder:
Johnson & Johnson, a major producer of pharmaceutical and home health consumer products, currently faces more than 25,000 lawsuits over claims that the talc in its baby powder may have been tainted with asbestos and caused cancer in many users.Last month, the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) filed its own lawsuit against the corporate giant over its marketing of Baby Powder to Black women. According to the claim, J&J systematically targeted its marketing efforts toward Black women without warning them of the potential risk for cancer. The lawsuit cites an internal study from 2006 indicating that at that time, 60 percent of Black women were using Baby Powder (compared to only 30 percent of the general population) and recommended taking measures to market directly to this demographic. According to a press release from Ben Crump, one of the attorneys for the plaintiff, “Black women were the subject of Johnson & Johnson’s marketing and advertising campaigns for decades and were a central part of the company’s business strategy.” The press release also asserts that “many NCNW members used J&J products and may have developed cancer as a result -- and many more may develop ovarian cancer in the future.”The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) is the nation’s oldest and largest organization of African-American women. Founded in 1935, today it has expanded into an “organization of organizations” representing more than 25,000 members and connecting to more than 3 million women through affiliate organizations. The NCNW is dedicated to “lead, advocate for, and empower women of African descent, their families and communities.”
