Chemical Exposure and Cancer

Given the ongoing exposure to dozens of harmful chemicals and carcinogens, it comes as little surprise that cancer remains a leading cause of death. According to latest estimates from the American Cancer Society, more than 1.7 million Americans will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in 2018, and approximately 609,640 people will die of cancer this year. Both of these numbers have increased slightly over the past two years. Meanwhile, the National Cancer Institute estimates that 14 million new cases of cancer occur worldwide each year, and the institute expects that number to rise to 22 million a year within the next 20 years.

Despite these projected increases, the good news is that mortality rates for cancer as a whole are actually dropping, as early detection and more effective forms of treatment become available. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case for rarer forms of cancer caused by exposure to certain toxic chemicals.

Some types of cancer (like breast cancer or lung cancer) can be attributed to many possible causes, so it’s more difficult to identify the source. But rarer, more deadly forms of cancer may be linked to specific chemical exposures. In such cases, we may be able to hold particular companies liable for exposing people to these known carcinogenic chemicals.
