How Veterans May Have Been Exposed to Asbestos
If you are a US Army veteran, particularly if you served before the 1980s, there is a risk that you were exposed to asbestos while in service. As asbestos is strongly linked to cancer and severe respiratory diseases, you must understand your possible risks of exposure and your legal rights if you have an asbestos-related illness. Madeksho Law explains what you need to know.
Asbestos Exposure in the US Military
Veterans may have been exposed to asbestos in numerous ways. The most likely means of exposure depends on which military branch you served in.
● Navy: Pipe insulation, boilers, pumps, coatings, valves, flooring, gaskets, any naval unit
● Army: Gloves, pipes, tiling, barracks, armored vehicles, plumbing systems, wiring
● Air Force: Engine components, wiring, brake linings, insulation, electrical wiring, air bases, training facilities
● Marines: Plane components, engine components, barracks, bases, wiring, roofing and flooring, armored vehicles
You may also have been exposed if you worked in any of the following roles:
● Manufacturing and installation
● Shipbuilding
● Mining
● Milling
● Demolition
● Construction
● Carpentry
Those who are most at risk served pre-1980. However, any veteran could be at risk. If you have concerns, contact our team who can advise if you may have been exposed.
Consequences of Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos exposure can lead to severe illness, including asbestosis and lung cancer. Asbestos is also linked to other cancers, including colon and esophageal cancers.
The most serious consequence of asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a particularly aggressive cancer that affects the pleura (the tissue surrounding your lungs). Mesothelioma can affect the lining of other organs, such as the abdomen, but these forms are less common.
Compensation for US Military Asbestos Exposure
Injured veterans can pursue compensation for asbestos exposure in two ways. The first is through a civil personal injury claim, and the second is through VA benefits.
● Personal injury claim: If you develop an asbestos-related disease due to military exposure, you may have a compensation claim against those responsible. This is true even if the wrongful party is no longer operational, as trust funds exist to enable injured veterans to seek the damages they are entitled to.
● VA benefits: Injured veterans may apply for VA benefits, a type of disability payment. The benefits cover those with a diagnosed asbestos-related disease contracted through their time in military service. Those with more severe asbestos injuries may qualify for additional disability benefits.
The option you choose depends on various factors, including how you were exposed and the nature of your injuries. Our asbestos attorneys can explain the process based on your unique case.
