Talc and Ovarian Cancer: Are You at Risk?
Johnson & Johnson, makers of popular baby and body powders, is in the midst of hundreds of lawsuits. The lawsuits come from consumers who developed ovarian cancer and mesothelioma after years of using their products. In 2018, a jury awarded 22 women $4.7 billion after they sued Johnson & Johnson, claiming that talcum powder products caused their ovarian cancers.
Types of Illnesses Caused by Talc
Since the 1970s, researchers have linked talcum powder use to cancer. In 2013, a comprehensive look at 16 observational studies showed a 33% increase in the risk of ovarian cancer for women who used talcum powder near their genitals. Other potential illnesses caused by talc can include:
- Fallopian Tube Cancer
- : Cancer that develops in the tubes that connect the ovaries and uterus
- Mesothelioma
- : A cancer of the tissue that lines the lungs, stomach, heart, and other organs
- Borderline Serous and Mucinous Tumors:
- Tumors of the ovary that involve a group of abnormal cells that form in the tissue covering the ovary.
Who Is at Risk?
Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that has absorbent properties when finely ground. Talc was once commonly used in baby and body powders because of those absorbent features. Women who used talcum powder in their genital areas regularly seem to be most at risk for developing cancer. Asbestos can also contaminate talcum powder, which is often found near talc when mined. No amount of asbestos is safe, and if talcum powder contaminated with asbestos is inhaled, ingested, or enters the body during use, it can lead to mesothelioma, which is caused by asbestos exposure.
