Promising Treatment for Ovarian Cancer in Our Future:
Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest cancers women can face. Over 20,000 women are diagnosed yearly in the U.S., and the five-year survival rate is just above 50% on average. The survival rate is lower because many women aren’t diagnosed in stages three or four until the ovarian cancer is advanced. When ovarian cancer first develops, the symptoms may not be noticeable, with only discomfort in the pelvic area, bloating or feeling fullness, weight loss, and fatigue.
Targeting Ovarian Cancer Cells
Now, Bath’s Royal United Hospital doctors have introduced a new treatment for targeting the removal of ovarian cancer cells. The new technology, PlasmaJet Ultra, uses ionized argon gas to destroy cancer cells during surgery, leaving healthy cells nearby free from damage. According to doctors, this will allow them to excise cancer cells precisely.Doctor Jonathan Frost, a consulting gynecologist, told the BBC, “We know that this is going to make such a difference to our patients and their quality of life, and we are delighted to be able to offer this advancement in cancer treatment to our patients at the RUH.” Because many women with ovarian cancer must also have part of their nearby bowel excised to eliminate cancer cells completely, the hope is that the new technology will make the inadvertent destruction of healthy tissue a thing of the past.
