Mesothelioma: Subtle Symptoms to Watch Out For
Mesothelioma is a rare but aggressive form of cancer. It affects the layer of tissue, or lining, which covers some of the body’s organs, including the heart and lungs. Unfortunately, most mesothelioma cases are linked to asbestos exposure – particularly heavy or repeated exposure – after ingesting or inhaling asbestos fibers. But most worryingly, mesothelioma is often terminal. Although there is no cure, new treatments are emerging, which, if used early enough, could extend a patient’s life.
Mesothelioma symptoms can mimic those of other, less serious conditions, which means the cancer often goes undetected for long periods. Below, we explore the main types of mesotheliomas and “red flag” symptoms to watch out for.
1. Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural mesothelioma develops in the lung lining. It is the most common type of mesothelioma. Asbestos fibers, when inhaled, can settle in this lining and eventually lead to cancerous cell formation.
Pleural mesothelioma may have an insidious and subtle onset, meaning symptoms are hard to detect. Contact your doctor urgently if you recognize these symptoms, especially if you have a history of asbestos exposure:
● Shortness of breath
● Chest tightness
● Wheezing
● Dry cough
● Fever/night sweats
● Fatigue
● Coughing up blood
● Low back pain
● Difficulty swallowing
● Hoarseness
2. Peritoneal Mesothelioma
Peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of the abdominal lining. Symptoms are often vague, subtle, or non-specific. Some sufferers have no symptoms until the condition is advanced. However, symptoms which your doctor should investigate include:
● Nausea
● Loss of appetite
● Weight loss
● Fatigue
● Abdominal pain
3. Pericardial Mesothelioma
Pericardial mesothelioma affects the tissue surrounding the heart. It is challenging to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to those of other heart conditions. However, symptoms to watch out for include:
● Cough
● Chest pain
● Shortness of breath
● Night sweats
● Weakness
Given how broad these symptoms are, you should report any worries to your doctor. They will evaluate your heart to determine if there are any concerns.
4. Testicular Mesothelioma
Testicular mesothelioma develops in the tissue surrounding the testes, forming part of the male reproductive system. Symptoms include swelling, a mass in one or both testicles and fluid accumulation. It is a rare form of mesothelioma, and the symptoms can be very subtle – should you have any concerns, contact your doctor promptly.
