Johnson & Johnson No Longer Selling Talcum Powder Globally:
Johnson & Johnson is a multi-billion-dollar global company that built its reputation on the squeaky clean smell of baby powder and talcum powder products. For decades, consumers have associated the company name with its clean, fresh scent. But for decades, the company was also hounded by claims that its talcum powder products were contaminated with asbestos. Talc and asbestos are minerals often found in nearby locations, creating an opportunity for asbestos contamination, a known carcinogen.Johnson & Johnson has always denied the claims. But in 2018, the New York Times and Reuters published investigations revealing J&J had known about possible asbestos contamination in its products for decades and done nothing to fix the problem. Now, the company faces more than 60,000 lawsuits and $3.5 billion in legal liability from users of their products facing cancer and mesothelioma.
Johnson & Johnson Limits Talc Sales
In response to the lawsuits and the media investigations, Johnson & Johnson stopped selling talc products in the U.S. and Canada, announcing the decision in May 2020. At the time, the company refused to admit liability, stating, “Demand for talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder in North America has been declining due in large part to changes in consumer habits and fueled by misinformation around the safety of the product and a constant barrage of litigation advertising.”Continuing the trend, Johnson & Johnson announced it would discontinue the sale of products containing talcum powder across the globe, beginning this year. The company claimed the halt was a result of declining demand internationally. Johnson & Johnson has never admitted fault concerning the thousands of lawsuits pending against it from cancer victims.
