Beyond Mesothelioma: Cancers Linked to Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos is a fibrous material with many uses due to its fire-resistant qualities. Although asbestos is relatively harmless when it remains undisturbed, the fibers themselves can cause serious injury when inhaled or ingested – especially if this exposure is frequent, prolonged, or heavy.
There is a recognized link between asbestos exposure and an increased risk of developing cancer. The cancer we hear about most often linked to asbestos is mesothelioma, but it is not the only cancer with possible links. Let’s consider other cancers which can, in some instances, be attributed to various types of asbestos exposure.
Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is cancer of the lining which covers and protects the body’s organs. The most common type of mesothelioma linked to asbestos exposure is pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lungs. When asbestos is inhaled, particularly in heavy or frequent doses, it can cause this aggressive form of cancer.
Mesothelioma is one of the most common cancers associated with prolonged asbestos exposure. Unfortunately, the prognosis for sufferers is often poor.
Other Asbestos-Related Cancers
Cancer has many causes. It’s not always easy to prove a link between asbestos exposure and cancer, particularly if there are other risk factors, such as heavy smoking. However, certain cancers are now recognized as being, in some cases, linked to asbestos exposure.
Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer affects the digestive system, specifically the rectum (back passage) and the large bowel. If asbestos is ingested through contaminated food or water, the fibers may settle in the digestive tract and cause disease. There is evidence to suggest that occupational exposure can be linked to an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer affects the ovaries, which are part of the female reproductive system. There is, now, a clear and demonstrable link between talc, or talcum powder use, and ovarian cancer. This is because talc often contains asbestos, which may be inhaled when the powder is applied.
Esophageal Cancer
The esophagus is the first part of your digestive system where food travels down. If you accidentally ingest or inhale asbestos fibers, they may settle here and cause cancerous cells to develop.
Laryngeal Cancer
Your voice box, or larynx, can be affected by cancer. It may be associated with cancer of the head or neck, or it can be localized. Asbestos may cause laryngeal cancer if it is inhaled or ingested, and the fibers settle in the surrounding tissues.
Pharyngeal Cancer
Pharyngeal cancer, or throat cancer, can affect the throat and surrounding tissue in the nose and mouth. It can develop from inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers, which settle in these delicate passages.
Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer affects the stomach or upper part of your digestive system. It can develop due to asbestos exposure if asbestos is accidentally ingested. This can be through contaminated food or water.
It’s important to remember that cancer can spread. Multiple organs may be affected due to a single underlying cause – asbestos exposure.
