British Farmers Seek to Ban Weedkiller Over Health Concerns:
Paraquat isn’t a household name in many places, but perhaps it should be. Paraquat is a powerful herbicide used commercially on weeds and grasses. In the U.S., the FDA has only approved the chemical for commercial use, but many farmers use it on glyphosate or Roundup-resistant weeds. Many farmers use paraquat because it kills weeds on contact and breaks up quickly in the soil. But paraquat can also be deadly to humans, and farmers in the U.K. are raising the alarm.
Why is Paraquat Dangerous?
Paraquat can have severe short and long-term side effects. If accidentally ingested, even a teaspoon can cause death. But long-term exposure to paraquat can also cause neurological problems. Research shows a link between the chemical and Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a progressive, chronic neurological disorder affecting balance, coordination, speech, and movement. The disease gradually kills neurons in the brain, eventually leading to death.
Call to Action in the U.K.
Because of its toxicity, farmers in the U.K. are calling for a ban on paraquat’s manufacture in their country. The European Union banned the chemical’s use in the EU in 2007, which still applies in the U.K. even after Brexit. However, Syngenta still manufactures paraquat under the brand name Gramoxone in its plant in Huddersfield. It then exports the product to the U.S., Japan, Australia, and the developing world.Syngenta continues to deny any definitive link between paraquat and Parkinson’s disease. However, according to toxicologist and professor Jon Heylings, who worked for Syngenta and its predecessor companies for 20 years, there is a link. He says, “Syngenta are trying to influence researchers who are working on Paraquat and also influence the direction of the research because the last thing Syngenta wants is a big blow up on Parkinson’s. So the strategy was to downplay anything to do with the potential neurotoxicity of Paraquat that could lead to Parkinson’s.”
