Bob Saget’s Fatal Brain Injury:
What Can We Learn About Diagnosing TBIs?
While we often think that TBI is something only football players or war veterans face, TBI is one of the most common serious injuries and a leading cause of death in the U.S. In fact, TBI has been a leading cause of death and disability among children and adults in the U.S. for decades. The world was reminded of this when comedian Bob Saget, best known for his lead role in the long-running TV series Full House, died after a fatal head injury. Recently, the Orlando coroner’s office released the final report on Bob Saget’s death, and the star’s tragic injury can teach us something about the challenge of diagnosing traumatic brain injuries rapidly and dealing with their unpredictable consequences.
The Autopsy Report
The autopsy revealed that Saget suffered brain injuries and skull fractures. Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany, M.D., reported that “the amount of force necessary to cause the fracture, coupled with the fact that the skin on the back of the head was still intact, led him [Stephany] to believe that the injury was most likely caused by ‘something hard, covered by something soft.’” The report went on to suggest that “a fall onto a carpeted floor” may have caused the injury.
Symptoms of TBI
Saget’s autopsy report indicated that Saget’s injury would have caused similar symptoms. “Dr. Stephany stated that the fracture would have stunned Mr. Saget, and, even if the bleeding occurred slowly, Mr. Saget would have noticed symptoms such as dizziness, and there would have signs that were obvious to those around him, such as issues with confusion, balance, and/or slurred speech.” The report indicated that the injury could have happened within a few hours of Saget’s death or within a day or two. This final report illustrates just how complicated TBIs can be, with a wide range of symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Seeking treatment can be an urgent matter without any visible bleeding.
