Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: Treatment Options
There are currently thousands of cases pending against Monsanto, manufacturer of the world’s most popular weed killer Roundup. The plaintiffs all have something terrible in common - they all have cancer. It turns out that the ubiquitous herbicide that millions of people have been using for decades to fight weeds, increases the risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system that destroys the body’s immune system. In August of 2018, the jury awards began. A California jury awarded $289 million to a high school groundskeeper with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after years of using Roundup. In March of 2019, a federal jury awarded more than $80 million to another man with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after he had applied Roundup on his animal wildlife refuge for decades. And then in May of 2019, a jury awarded a couple more than $2 billion after they were both diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The couple had used Roundup on the three properties they owned for decades. In this case, both the jury and the judge noted that Roundup was a “substantial factor” in causing the couple’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.Millions of people in the U.S. have used Roundup, in some cases for decades. So, it can be frightening to hear that Roundup can increase your cancer risk. In this article, we’ll discuss what non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is and how it is treated.
What is Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma?
Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which support’s the body’s immune systems. Your body produces lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell that fights infections. Lymphocytes normally have a life cycle where cells are constantly replaced by the body as they die. If those “dead” lymphocytes continue to abnormally reproduce, they can crowd up the lymphatic system with cancerous cells in the lymph nodes. This disease can spread to the rest of the lymphatic system, including the spleen, lymphatic vessels, tonsils, adenoids, and bone marrow.
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Treatment Options
If your non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is aggressive, your doctor may recommend chemotherapy, radiation therapy, a bone marrow transplant, or other drug therapy.
- Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is an oral or injectable drug treatment that kills cancer cells. Side effects can include nausea and hair loss and long-term effects can include heart and lung damage, fertility problems, and other cancers.
- Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy uses x-rays or protons in a high-powered beam to kill cancer cells. Radiation can be aimed at lymph nodes and other areas nearby where the cancer might spread. Side effects include skin redness and hair loss at the site of the radiation. Long-term risks include heart disease, stroke, thyroid problems, infertility, and other cancers.
- Bone Marrow Transplant: A bone marrow, or stem cell, transplant uses high doses of radiation or chemotherapy to suppress your body’s bone marrow. Healthy bone marrow cells from your body or a donor are then infused into your blood where they travel to your bones and rebuild your body’s bone marrow.
- Drug Therapy: There are also other drug therapies that help your body’s immune system fight cancer. These drugs include antibody medications and radioimmunotherapy drugs that carry radioactive isotopes and deliver radiation directly to cancer cells.
