In certain cases, mesothelioma can occur in the pericardium—the lining surrounding the heart muscle. We refer to this as pericardial mesothelioma. Due to its rarity, pericardial mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose. (Many times, the official diagnosis occurs after death, during the autopsy.) Doctors frequently identify the disease after eliminating other explanations for the symptoms, detecting its presence through biopsies and/or imaging.
Some chemotherapies have proven ineffective in treating this form of the cancer, although some drugs have proved beneficial. When it’s an option, a common treatment for pericardial mesothelioma is surgery to remove the pericardium—a procedure that is both difficult and risky.
