What Is Aredia?
Aredia is the trade name under which Novartis sells Pamidronate. It is in the group of medicines called bisphosphonates, which alter the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body. Aredia is prescribed to treat osteoporosis and prevent bone loss. It is also prescribed to treat multiple myeloma. Aredia is administered intravenously once a month over a period of 3 hours.
How Can Aredia Harm You?
Aredia can cause atypical fractures in older women and a rare condition called osteonecrosis of the jaw. Typically, women who take Aredia to treat osteoporosis are those who develop atypical fractures. Multiple myeloma patients have historically been those who have contracted osteonecrosis of the jaw. However, because women take Aredia at an earlier age, their longer use may also lead to osteonecrosis of the jaw.
