What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer linked to asbestos toxic exposure. Approximately 90 percent of the 3,000 Mesothelioma cases diagnosed each year are linked to past asbestos exposure. If someone you love has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related condition, you likely have many questions about the disease such as what it is and how Mesothelioma can be treated.

Mesothelioma is so named because it affects the Mesothelium – membranous tissue that lines the major body cavities and that facilitates fluid transfer and internal lubrication. The types of mesothelioma are named based on the specific area of the body affected: Pleural Mesothelioma affects the pleura, which lines the thoracal cavity that contains the lungs; Peritoneal Mesothelioma attacks the peritoneum, which lines the abdominal cavity that holds the stomach and intestines; Testicular Mesothelioma which surrounds the testes; and Pericardial Mesothelioma affects the pericardium, which surrounds the heart.

What Causes Mesothelioma?

A diagnosis of Mesothelioma is often accompanied by the question: “how were you exposed to asbestos?” Mesothelioma is considered a “signature disease.” Mesothelioma is the signature left by asbestos exposure years—even decades—prior to diagnosis. This means that preventing asbestos exposure would have prevented nearly all cases of Mesothelioma.

Why is preventing asbestos exposure so difficult? It is difficult because asbestos was incorporated into products many times without the user ever being informed or warned that asbestos was present. Therefore, because asbestos product manufacturers failed to inform or warn users, many Mesothelioma victims are unaware how they were exposed without a proper investigation by experienced legal counsel. To make matters more difficult, bystanders merely in the presence of asbestos use have been shown to later develop mesothelioma—specifically wives and children washing clothes of asbestos workers or in the presence of home renovation projects.
